Stubhub Final Four European League History

The Euroleague Final Four format was first used in the 1987/1988 season. Then the Euroleague was called the FIBA Champions Cup. The thirty-first season of the best European club competition was not easy, as the introduction of the “Final Four” rule immediately increased the entertainment of a single match, whether it was a final, semi-final, or a match for third place (which no one needs now). The matches of the “Final Four”-1988 were held in the city of Ghent, the capital of the province of East Flanders in Belgium. Partizan from Serbia, Aris from Greece, Olimpia Milan from Italy, and Maccabi Tel Aviv from Israel took part in the first-ever “Final Four” of the FIBA Champions Cup. The semifinal pairs were as follows: Partizan – Maccabi and Aris – Olimpia Milan. Maccabi beat Partizan with a score of 82:87 and reached the final, but Aris lost its match with the same score as in the first pair. Partizan and Aris met in the match for third place, and basketball players from the Serbian club won with a score of 105:93. In the final, Olimpia Milan beat Maccabi with a score of 90-84. The club from Italy was the strongest in the tournament at that time, taking the second champion title in a row. The famous center Bob McAdoo, who is in the official top 75 of the best players in the history of the NBA, played at Olimpia Milan at that time. Bob got the MVP of that Final Four. After the Final Four in Ghent, this format is used in the current Euroleague to this day. This is the most important event of the year in European basketball.
